To the Editor: The English language is now the lingua franca of the global medical research. For example in the Medline database, 9 out of 10 journals have English as primary language, besides articles in this language are more likely to be read and referenced. In this way, the “General and Internal Medicine” category in the ranking of the Journal Citation Report 2011, has the New England Journal of Medicine as the journal with the highest impact factor (IF) 53.298, while the IF of the Spanish language magazine with higher IF in the same category, the Revista Clínica Española, is on the 44th with an impact factor of 2.008. While the language of publication of a magazine does not affect its quality, the publication of articles in English could allow inclusion into the international scientific community, making it more attractive for authors to publish in journals that adopt this method.
